But first, what happened in May?
A litter pick on historical grounds
Hello there,
In May, we ventured out to Cippenham! Next to the Asda is a field named the Cippenham Moat. This used to be a 13th Century Royal Palace created by King Henry III, and you can still see the outlines of the, you guessed it, moat.
The residents came together for some early Sunday morning litter picking. It was cloudy but dry (yay). We collected 18 bags full and loads of extra items. Jean, who joined from the Cippenham residents association, found a hoover! There was also a baby car seat dug out of the bushes.
Rifat from Asda provided us with much-needed refreshments; we enjoyed bananas and (a lot of) doughnuts! Darren from the society ensured everyone had coffee or tea.
We picked for around 1,5 hrs. Sandy arrived when we started to pack up because it began to rain. She walked from Elms Road to the Asda and filled a bag on the way! This made our total 18 bags! Thank you to all the enthusiastic volunteers for a great pick! And thank you to Rifat for the snacks and Slough Borough Council for the litter pickers and picking up the full bags.
What has June in store for us? World refill day!
Have you ever been to a refill store? On 16 June, it’s World Refill Day! We don’t have a refill store in Slough yet. But there are some things we can do locally to support World Refill Day.
– Refill your water bottle at Nando’s/ Greggs
– Bring your coffee cup to Starbucks/ Costa
– Pack your lunch box instead of buying single-use plastic packaging lunch
– Buy large bottles of shampoo/ shower gel/ hand wash from TK Maxx and refill smaller bottles in your bathroom
– Have your milk delivered (in glass bottles)
– Bring your containers to the butcher
If you want to visit a refill store, there is one in Maidenhead (22 High Street) and in Windsor (91 St. Leonards Rd). Don’t forget to bring your containers!
Weekday litter picks are back!
Upon request we have decided to bring back the weekday litter picks. They will be every other Thursday in Upton Court Park at 14:00, starting from 9th June, then 23 June, 7 July etc etc
We call these mini litter picks because it will only be one hour. Bags and litter pickers will be provided. Please bring your own gloves and wear weather-appropriate clothing and closed shoes. Let’s meet in the car park next to the changing accommodation.
Saturday 18 June – Kennedy Park
Below a picture of the litter pick from last year in Kennedy Park. We will be there again on Saturday 18 June from 10.30, join us! We will meet near the car park at the entrance of the park. As always, bags and litter pickers will be provided but please bring gloves.
We hope to see you there!
On behalf of the committee,
Thank you for your support and we will see you soon!
