In April, meet our researchers!
But first, what happened in the last few months?
Hello there,
We have not hibernated, and the start of the year has kept us busy at the Slough Anti-Litter Society! Thanks to our incredible volunteers and supporters, we’ve been buzzing with activity these past few months.
Hello 2024!
We kicked off the year with a positive step – our Hello 2024 litter pick! We cleaned up the area around Burlington Street and ended with complimentary refreshments at Moxy. It was fantastic to see a local business like Moxy participate and support our efforts. Together, we collected a whopping 13 bags of trash, a trolley, a chair, and even a car battery!
We also welcomed Alice and Rosa from the University of Reading. Remember the community research project activities we did last year, like coffee mornings and pub quiz? Well, that project is back for 2024! More details at the end of this newsletter.
Repair Café on the Move!
Our Repair Café has a new address. You can now find us on the first floor of the “NotJUST a store” unit on Bath Road in Westgate Retail Park, SL1 5PS. We recently celebrated our first anniversary at the new location with volunteers, supporters, and ofcourse the mayor of Slough. Special thanks to Sairah from Cardo who brought generous gifts!
Clothes Swap Success Story!
Our first ever Clothes Swap to celebrate International Womens Day and raise funds for Target Ovarian Cancer was a smashing hit! It was great seeing women come together to celebrate sustainability and that well known Slough community spirit. The quality and quantity of the clothes brought in to be swapped was high, which was very important for me personally as I wanted a certain standard to an event like this. It highlighted the importance but also the ease of reusing and giving pre-loved items a second life.
Together, we raised a significant £624.20! The success of this event has us planning to make it a regular occurrence. We’re already brainstorming ways to make it even bigger and better next time. If sustainable fashion excites you, we’d love your help on the planning team!
Colnbrook Shines with a Spring Clean!
Our Colnbrook litter pick, organized by Councillor Puja Bedi with support from local councillors, scouts, and the community, was another great success! We provided adult litter pickers, bags, and safety briefing, while Cardo offered children’s pickers and refreshments.
A special shout-out to the Squirrel Scouts, who were as busy as bees (or should we say, squirrels!) picking up litter and making Colnbrook sparkle. They, along with the Bevers, Cubs, and Scouts, did a fantastic job. Huge thanks to Cardo for the post-clean-up treats, and to Councillor Puja Bedi and St Thomas’s Church for organizing and hosting the event.
And now, what is happening in April?
Pub Crawl Litter Pick is back on 7th April
At 12:00, we meet up at The Red Cow (140 Albert Street) and start litter picking from there for 30-40 minutes until we get to The Wheatsheaf for our first 20 minutes stop to drink.
Afterwards, 40 minutes litter picking to The Alpha Arms for another 20 minutes drink. Then we’ll litter pick our way back to the Red Cow for a well-deserved last drink and optional Sunday Roast.
Mark Your Calendars! April 21st – Community Research Project
Get ready to meet our researchers from the University of Reading on April 21st! They will be leading a workshop in Moxy, all about the litter problems in Slough. So join us and have your say! Thank you to Moxy for kindly hosting this workshop for us.
And last but not least….
Thank You!
We couldn’t do all this amazing work without YOU, our dedicated volunteers and supporters. We appreciate your continued support in making Slough a cleaner, greener place.
On behalf of the team,
Thank you for your support and we will see you soon!
